Peer Mentor Program
The Peer Mentor Program is a binge drinking prevention strategy funded through the Department of Health and Ageing to develop and implement a peer mentoring program for LGBT young people aged between 12 and 24 years.
This project aims to:
- prevent and reduce binge drinking in LGBT young people;
- support LGBT young people to identify triggers that lead to binge drinking;
- develop harm-reduction strategies for binge drinking; and
- provide alternative alcohol-free activities/spaces for LGBT young people.
This program will:
1. Develop a Peer Mentoring Program for LGBT young people aged 12 to 24 designed around prevention and harm-reduction of binge drinking based on best practice and latest research that will include;
- Identification and selection of potential mentors
- Mentor training program that includes
- Understanding the impacts of homophobia
- Identifying and responding to homophobia
- Support strategies for LGBT peers
- Health information about binge drinking
- Supporting and supervising mentors
- Event Information
- Drug & alcohol free activity suggestion guide
- Information on how to host a drug and alcohol free event
- Information on how to raise money to fund the regional LGBT young people community groups
- Resources and referral information
- Pre and post evaluation of its outcomes
2. Facilitate the delivery of the LGBT Youth Peer Mentoring Program to a group of LGBT young people in South East Queensland. Funds will also be distributed to community groups involved with working with LGBT young people across the state to conduct LGBT Youth Peer Mentor Program. This will also include:
- Provide ongoing supervision and support to mentors in their roles supporting other LGBT young people
- Monitor, review and evaluate the delivery and outcomes of the LGBT Youth Peer Mentoring program
3. Support LGBT youth mentors to facilitate drug and alcohol free events each year for LGBT young people in Brisbane. Funds will also be disributed to community groups for them to facilitate drug and alcohol free events for LGBT young people in their region
4. Resources targeted at LGBT young people regarding binge drinking will be developed and distributed
