About Us

Open Doors commenced direct service with young people in January 2002.

Open Doors began in response to a funding round that was announced as part of the Reconnect Program – an early intervention program for young people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, and their families.

A group of determined people who were already working with lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender young people in Brisbane planned and developed a service that could support young people and their families, and provide education to the community on the issues, needs and experiences they face.

The group was successful and Open Doors was funded from July 1 , 2001. The Brisbane Youth Service agreed to sponsor the funds on behalf of the Open Doors Steering Committee until such time as Open Doors became incorporated in its own right.
