Sometimes parents feel:
- Alone and confused
- Homosexuality can be cured
- They did something wrong as a parent
- A sense of loss
- Homosexuality is sinful
Parents experience very mixed emotions. Many experience a grieving period while others suffer great confusion about how “this” happened. Unfortunately many are reluctant to seek support and struggle silently.
But once people can talk with other parents of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender children they realize the problems and issues are very similar and eventually realize not insurmountable.
Meeting with or talking to other parents also helps to break the isolation many parents experience. The first step is always the hardest. PFLAG also offers support to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people seeking assistance on how to tell a family. PFLAG also provides written information and possible referrals to give parents which helps understanding and provide support.
