SCHOOL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Are you looking to increase your school’s capacity to support the mental health and engagement of your LGBTIQ+ SB students?

LGBTIQ+ SB students in Queensland face significant challenges. Writing Themselves in 4, a national survey of LGBTIQ+ SB young people aged 14 – 21 found:

  • In the previous 12 months, 60.2% reported having felt unsafe or uncomfortable at secondary school due to their sexuality or gender identity
  • In the previous 12 months, 40.8% had experienced verbal harassment; 22.8% sexual harassment or assault; 9.7% physical harassment or assault
  • 81% reported high or very high levels of psychological distress
  • 10.1% had attempted suicide in the past year, and 25.6% had attempted suicide at some point in their lives
  • Many LGBTIQ+ SB students report hearing negative terms and experiencing a lack of intervention from adults when harassment occurs.
  • In relation to almost all findings, trans and gender diverse young people experienced disproportionately poor health outcomes.

All the above have significant impact on the mental health of LGBTIQ+ SB students and their education engagement and highlights the need for continued efforts to create safer and more inclusive environments for LGBTIQ+ SB students.

TESTIMONIALS

“INCREDIBLE facilitators, I was sad for it to end – wish it was a 2 dayer! They created a safe environment for us to ask questions and not know things which is so important. They were understanding of the variation in our roles and were able to explain how we all play an important part in creating a safe environment.”

“Both Necho and Morgan were fabulous presenters who gave 110% in delivering with such grace, humility and care. Thank you for making the experience today a comfortable one and something I am excited to share with my friends and family.”
